One of the bills would increase the penalties for serial thieves and another would reinstate a mandatory 20-year minimum sentence for anyone convicted of using a firearm during a violent crime.

Several new bills aimed at cracking down on crime in California were announced Monday.

At a news conference in Sacramento on Monday, a group of Republicans as well as law enforcement officials, including several from Southern California, announced the bills. Elected leaders pointed to the recent mass shootings across the state, also referencing the recent killings of two Riverside County sheriff's deputies.
