Some cable operators are actually encouraging cord-cutting—the phenomenon of viewers abandoning traditional cable subscriptions in favor of over-the-top television services

In what appears to be a counterintuitive move, some cable operators are actually encouraging cord-cutting — the phenomenon of viewers abandoning traditional cable subscriptions in favor of over-the-top television services.

They compared annual video subscriber losses at heavyweights like Comcast and Charter with much steeper declines at companies like Cable One and Mediacom . The latter “are dropping programming, raising prices, withdrawing promotions, and, perhaps most tellingly, helping customers make the transition to vMVPDs,” they wrote.

Why? Because aside from lower programming costs, cablers would also spend less on customer service, repairs and set-top boxes, to name a few line items. And they could continue to raise rates on existing customers.
