A cache of ancient coins found buried in a Welsh field is reportedly more than two millennia old — and may have been hidden by Roman soldiers from the nearby fort of Canovium.

“People do not realize the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes at the national museum, from excavating the coins, to looking after them and identifying them, so they can be reported on as treasure,” Moss said in a statement from the museum. “It was raining heavily, so I took a look at Tom and made my way across the field towards him to tell him to call it a day on the detecting,” Moss said.

The coins — some of which were minted just three decades after the birth of Christ — will now be in a Welsh museum.Researchers performed CT scans, took photographs and did 3D modeling to get a better idea of the coins and their origins, USA Today reported. The coins might have first belonged to Roman soldiers stationed at Canovium, a fort in what was then the Roman province of Britannia.
