Someone killed Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell with his own gun. They're still out there.

The dispatcher tried calling Mitchell’s radio. Nothing. They tried calling his cellphone. No answer. Twelve seconds after Mitchell failed to pick up, the dispatcher sent out a Code 3 to all deputies: Head to Meiss Road now with lights and sirens. As they rushed Crystal to the hospital to say goodbye to her husband, electronic highway signs flashed by. “OFFICER SHOT. WHITE CHEVY VAN. NO PLATE,” they read. At 4:45 a.m., Mitchell was declared dead. Crystal was given the badge he was wearing on his last patrol; when she flipped it over, she saw he’d laminated a photo of her and their 6-year-old son Jake and pasted it inside.
