A California hiker was injured Tuesday when stopping a mountain lion’s attack on a dog, officials said. The individual was walking a small dog in Solstice Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area when the mountain lion attempted to pounce on the dog. Upon intervening, the person was scratched by the mountain lion and received a puncture wound on the hand, a social media post from the recreation area said. National Park Service rangers treated the person’s injuries.
“The area closure was instituted to give the lions time to leave the area and minimize the chances of any further conflict,” park officials said. Mountain lions are generally shy animals, and conflicts with humans are uncommon. “If you do encounter a mountain lion, make yourself appear as large and intimidating as possible by yelling, waving your arms, and even throwing objects in the direction of the animal,” park officials said.
