The daughter, the suit claims, felt 'pressured' by the counselor to socially transition to a male identity.
Plaintiff Aurora Regino alleges that in early 2022, her daughter told a counselor she"felt like a boy." The daughter, the suit claims, felt"pressured" by the counselor to adopt male pronouns and socially transition to a male identity. Regino says she was unaware of what was going on with her daughter until several weeks after this process began.
The lawsuit states that Regino was supportive of her daughter's transitioning but frustrated that she was kept in the dark. The lawsuit states that Regino was informed by district personnel of a"Parental Secrecy Policy" required by California's Assembly Bill 1226, a 2013 law that extended anti-discrimination protections in schools to transgender individuals.
After the lawsuit received substantial coverage locally and in national conservative media, Chico Unified School District Superintendent Kelly Staley disputed several of its claims in"While our legal counsel is currently reviewing the lawsuit, we can address the article's headline and assure our community that Chico Unified does not have a 'Parental Secrecy Policy,' nor do we ever try to change a student's individual identity," the message states.
Staley added,"As you know, Chico Unified continues to focus on family engagement and works hard to maintain open and transparent communication. We highly value the relationships our families have built with their schools." The message from Staley did not dispute that Regino wasn't informed of her daughter's transitioning or that the district interprets AB1226 as a directive not to provide such information to parents in the future, which is at the heart of Regino's arguments in media appearances.
