Call for allies to step up with LGBTQ distress 'worse than after postal survey'

Four out of five LGBTQ+ people say they feel worse now than they did after the 'yes' vote on same-sex marriage, describing the debate over religious discrimination as 'Marriage Equality 2.0' because it is amplifying negative voices

by Macquarie University researcher Shirleene Robinson, commissioned by Absolut in the lead up to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras this week. Dr Robinson was also a director of Australian Marriage Equality.

"We need to make sure we elevate the loudest voices and that's the positive voices because truly the dominant perspective in society is one of support for the LGBTQ+ community," she said. This was measured by the K10 Psychological Distress Scale, a clinical tool based on anxiety and depressive symptoms experienced in the most recent four-week period.

Queer performer Lavrence, also known as Mitchell Wilson, with his brother Jordan, one of his biggest allies. As a child who loved to sing and dance and always knew he was queer, Laverence did not fit in when he was sent to a private boys' school on the north shore in year 5. He was badly bullied and the school counsellor told him to "act more masculine" before he finally transferred to a performing arts school in year 7.He found out later that his twin brother Christian and older brother Jordan had repeatedly stuck up for him at school.
