Lodging complexes are a cost-effective and supportive model of community housing, and there are calls for governments to build more of them in a bid to alleviate the homelessness crisis.
Foundation Housing runs 15 lodging houses across Perth and Broome, including homes and apartment complexes, which in 2022 housed 280 people. The organisation wants governments to build more of the facilities to help ease the state's housing crisis.
Now he is content living in a small room at a lodging house, operated by Foundation Housing, while studying, feeding willy wagtails in the backyard and caring for his two cockatiels. It is an approach that the University of Western Australia's Centre for Social Impact recently examined and found a vastly different picture to the bad image lodging and boarding houses developed from the mid-20th century.
"People can have access to OzHarvest, dental, health care, haircuts — all those sorts of things which otherwise wouldn't be part of a normal building," he said in the lobby of an apartment complex Foundation runs in Perth. Michael Chester says a shortage of housing is making it difficult for people to transition out of supported living situations. But the organisation was struggling to move people out of transitional accommodation, he said, because of the state's incredibly tight housing market, which was being exacerbated by a 60 per cent increase in demand at Uniting's crisis support hub over the past year.
It's not off the table for WA Housing Minister John Carey, who said lodging houses played an important role in the state's housing system. It comes after the government announced hundreds of millions of dollars to boost social and affordable housing in this week's state budget.
