NICC chief Philip Crawford says the corporate regulator should 'have a good hard look' at The Star Entertainment Group, after a report this week found the company was 'not suitable' to hold a licence for its Sydney casino. jason_om abc730
, Adam Bell SC was excoriating in his descriptions of The Star's misconduct. It was "dysfunctional", "deceptive", and "brazenly misleading".
It will be up to the NSW Independent Casino Commission to decide on the future of The Star's licence. Speaking to 7.30, chief commissioner Philip Crawford would not publicly declare his view about The Star's licence but said he could not let the casino's breaches pass. The report raised curious cases, such as a Star senior vice president who was the Suncity junket's key relationship manager. In 2020, he vanished, followed by "extremely serious allegations" against him."They should have been [made aware]," Mr Bell said.Mr Crawford told 7.30 that the company needed shaking up.
Some board members and executives have already left, including former CEO Matt Bekier, while others have indicated they are leaving, Mr Crawford said. "One of the important duties of directors is to act with care and diligence and Bell has presented ample evidence that they did not," she said.
