Laws banning the sale of human bones need to be reviewed to close 'loopholes', legal experts say, amid a police probe into an auction house accused of selling skeletal remains.

An SA Police spokesperson told ABC News it was still determining "whether any offences had been committed in respect to the possession or sale of any of the remains", with the investigation ongoing. However, the law allows for tissue to be sold if it has been subjected to 'processing or treatment', and is intended to be used for 'therapeutic, medical or scientific purposes' in accordance with the directions of a medical practitioner.
"The society is unaware how common this practice was or still is, and is not aware of any specific instances of this practice in SA, but suggests the law could be reviewed to ensure such loopholes cannot be exploited," he said.
