Rangers and traditional owners are calling for more federal surveillance and enforcement in remote waters after finding four Indonesian vessels fishing illegally in nearby creeks last week.

One of several foreign fishing vessels found in West Arnhem Land last week by members of the Garngi rangers. Garngi rangers and traditional owners say illegal fishing in Australia's northern waters could put the area's marine environment and sacred sites at risk.

When Mr Wauchope went back the next day in a helicopter, he and his colleagues were concerned to discover three more foreign boats moored up creeks near the first one. The ranger group called the Australian Border Force to report the sighting, but Mr Wauchope said the boats had quickly moved out of the area where he’d seen them.

"They should be doing more patrolling than the rangers, because our rangers out there, they don't have anything to protect themselves. What happens if they have weapons?" Mr Ryan said the NLC believed tougher penalties were needed to deter illegal fishing, including the destruction of vessels, which used to be more commonplace.
