"I couldn't get into a doctor ... and I didn't feel safe to get into a car and go down to anywhere and seek medical attention," she said."Without that program, I wouldn't be here and my kids wouldn't have a mum."The condition was picked up through tests conducted during a health check at the refuge as part of the pilot program.
The outreach team eventually wants to see the program expanded to all domestic violence refuges across Australia.The PHN's safe and healthy families manager Shannon Richardson said many people experiencing domestic and family violence slipped through the health system's cracks, which the program aimed to address.It can feel hopeless not knowing how to help a friend or loved one who might be experiencing domestic violence.
