Cam Smith survived an 18th-hole trip into the water to claim golf’s ‘fifth major’, the Players Championship, and pocket a record $US3.6 million prize in Florida.
Third-round leader Anirban Lahiri was the only man who could catch him but the Indian golfer couldn’t make birdie on the last to force a playoff. The world No.322 took home $US2.18 million for his trouble. Instead of landing in the safe zone, Smith’s perilous shot into the corner of the green saw him finish close to the pin and he made birdie.-But Smith admitted he didn’t have that much ice in his veins.“I would be lying if I said I was aiming there, I was probably aiming ten feet left of there but I still wanted to be aggressive and still wanted to make birdie.
