Cameron Smith's Shift on LIV Golf Return and Financial Uncertainty

Cameron Smith, a prominent figure in LIV Golf, has acknowledged that a return to the PGA Tour is on the table if the breakaway league collapses. The financial situation of LIV Golf remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that the league is searching for new investors and may face staff reductions. Additionally, the US$40 million Team Championship in Michigan is in serious doubt.

Rocket Classic Round 4 Highlights | 12:09 Cameron Smith has made his strongest admission yet that a return to the PGA Tour is on the table, conceding he would ‘100 per cent’ head back if LIV Golf collapses.

The comments represent a significant shift from one of LIV Golf’s staunchest supporters, with the Australian having consistently backed the breakaway league since joining in 2022 and previously shutting down suggestions he could return to the PGA Tour. As recently as January, Smith rejected the opportunity to follow former LIV star Brooks Koepka back to the PGA Tour, insisting he remained fully committed to captaining Ripper GC.

Now, speaking ahead of this week’s LIV Golf event at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, the former world No.2 acknowledged the PGA Tour would become the natural destination for players should LIV fail to survive beyond next season. The uncertainty surrounding LIV extends far beyond its tournament schedule, with reported LIV Golf having begun issuing 30-day termination notices to a large number of staff and contractors, with their employment expected to end in early September.

LIV players could collectively still be owed more than US$250 million in unpaid contract money, with two-time major champion Jon Rahm reportedly still due as much as US$150 million from his record-breaking deal. The report claims a potential bankruptcy filing could leave players without receiving the full value of their contracts, although any future investment could see portions of those deals converted into equity should a restructured ‘LIV 2.0’ emerge.

While the financial picture remains unclear, players are also searching for answers about what comes next. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil met with players this week at Bedminster, but veteran Richard Bland admitted there was still no meaningful update on either potential investors or the status of the US$40 million Team Championship in Michigan. that lasted more than 30 minutes, with Bland describing the mood as ‘positive’ but conceding there were still ‘no answers’ over the league’s future
