If you're looking for a pair of earphones and money is no object, the Trifecta IEMs from Portland-based Campfire Audio are probably the warmest and most detailed you're ever likely to hear.

The Campfire Audio Trifecta differ from most high-end IEMs in that they use three dynamic drivers rather than the more usual multiple balanced-armature designs used by many high-end manufacturers. Balanced armature technology is precise, but the sound can be a bit clinical and lack warmth. The technology requires clever crossover engineering to ensure that all frequencies are fed to the correct drivers. Honestly, it’s a complicated concept and sometimes misses the mark.

Like most IEMs, the Trifecta use detachable cables and Campfire Audio hasn’t stinted. Inside the exquisite packaging in which the Trifecta is delivered, there are three flat, four-core cables with balanced 2.5mm and Pentaconn 4.4mm terminations, as well as an unbalanced 3.5mm connector most people are used to.

The tone of the Trifecta IEMs is close to perfection, in my opinion. They have a warm and deep bass that manages to be subtle and accurate in a way few earphones can. The midrange is pitched perfectly, with just enough forwardness to hold the show together. Meanwhile, the treble is superbly sweet, with a level of detail that doesn’t beat the listener around the head or trigger a migraine.

The Trifecta brought out every nuance in Clara’s perfect voice, while the soundstage focused the piano to perfection on tracks like “Viagem”. This is the kind of music that the Trifecta IEMs were made for. There’s a feeling of Saudade running through all the songs. The word means a quiet pathos and longing and can’t easily be translated from Portuguese.
