It's not easy, but there's a joy to camping that is hard to find elsewhere.
It’s 2am-ish. My nose is cold, my back stiff and I can’t ignore my bladder. I reach out and rustle around in the clothes strewn on the floor until I find my puffer jacket. I slog it on and force my thick-socked feet into dirty runners without bothering with the shoelaces. Is there a louder sound in the dead of night than unzipping a tent? At that moment, I doubt it. I feel like I’ve ripped 20 people from their slumber.Hunched against the cold I trudge –– on the gravel path.
We now take an armful of pillows to get even close to comfortable in our tent. My chiropractor would say, “It’s purely an age thing.” But despite the discomfort and packing, Australians love to camp. With many missing their usual jaunts due to the coronavirus, campsites will likely be in hot demand. Often they already require booking a year ahead or entering a ballot. A ballot!
For us grown-ups – in between the food preparation and toiletry bag organising – there are also moments of joy.
