Opinion | It’s quite a turnaround to now be a dog owner. Even the cats are (sort of) coming around, with Violet giving Daphne “permission” to hang out with her
“Excuse me, is that a dog?” asks the woman queuing behind me outside the vet. She’s eyeing up the beige and white muppet-like creature I have nestled in my arms.
“No, it’s a cat wearing a dog suit!” I reply, unable to help myself. There is a slight pause and I notice the other people in the line are all looking rather quizzically at me. The girls and I had fallen for a friend’s puppy and we knew a similarly small type of dog would work for us.“Of course it’s a dog! It’s our new puppy, Daphne,” I say with a laugh. Later, I realise that wasn’t such a dumb question since I’m a paid-up member of the Crazy Cat Lady Club.
Now she is almost six months old and sleeps through the night – probably because she sleeps on our bed! Shockingly, it was my husband – who had been adamant there would be “no dogs on the bed” – who suggested it would be “cruel” to not let Daphne snuggle on our doona. This dog has worked her magic on our family.Even the cats are coming around, with Violet giving Daphne “permission” to hang out with her. This pussy cat even joins us for a walk, accompanying us to the end of the street each day.
As Daphne and I dawdle around the neighbourhood together, I find myself talking to more and more people. How is this even possible, given that I’ve always loved to stop for a chat? I now know that dogs really do bring people together. And I’ve also discovered that I love dogs almost as much as I love cats. Miracles can happen.

Australians mustn't 'bet everything on being saved by a medical miracle' | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Andrew Bolt says the fact one of the “human guinea pigs” got sick in phase three trials of a potential coronavirus vaccine just shows Australians have to instead learn to live with the virus and not wait for what could be a false hope. \n\nTrials for one of the world’s most promising coronavirus vaccines, being developed by Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, has been suspended after a participant suffered and adverse reaction.\n\nMr Bolt said while the sick participant doesn't mean the end of the vaccine, and that even if this vaccine doesn't work, there are eight others in phase-three trials. \n\n'But, on the other hand, this is a big warning,' Mr Bolt said. \n\n'Surely it's clear now we cannot bet everything on being saved within months by a medical miracle.\n\n'It would be a miracle, because no vaccine has yet been discovered for any coronavirus, and this one, even if it works, could work only partially like the flu vaccine.\n\n'So yes, go ahead, hope for the best, but plan for disappointment. Be more realistic.\n\n'Which means for us, ending this stupid fantasy that we can live like this until the vaccine does finally come.\n\n'We have to instead learn to live with this virus.'\n\nImage: AP \n
