For much of the last decade, Guatemala has been on a slippery slope of corruption and authoritarianism that has eroded its incipient democratic institutions.
It is no wonder that hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans have left the Central American nation in the last few years.stunned political observers and made it to a runoff to be held in August. Bernardo Arévalo, 64, a philosopher and anthropologist, will face conservative Sandra Torres, 67.
