AFL: The Hawks led by 42 at one stage but Port Adelaide would run them down in a speical game that went down to the wire.
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has come under fire for “shutting up shop” in his side’s thrilling one-point loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday.
Fox Footy’s David King lamented the way Hawthorn “torched the game” against the Power – in particular the tactics employed by Mitchell late in the contest. “The one that really sits in the pit of my stomach is moving a guy who’s kicked five goals in your forward line to play down back,” he said.“I can’t recall a player going from kicking five goals in three quarters to playing effectively back pocket. I’ve never seen it before. We were throwing up names just off the top and we had to go back 30 years ago to find some of those names.“You only go inside 50 four or five times from that point onwards.
“But this is a game I think they’ll look at it and say ‘Sam, you don’t need to be the reason every week. Just let the players play’.”
