We took a road trip in our 2023 Toyota Cross Hybrid to see if we prefer the automaker’s in-car system.
Early adopters of the Corolla Cross missed out on quite a bit, especially as Toyota also bundles insuite of driver assist and active safety features for the 2023 model year. To get a better sense of what buyers get going forward when they purchase a new Corolla Cross, we spent some time with the new Hybrid model to check out some of the features excluded from our car. To thoroughly vet the changes, we set out on a 600-mile road trip to put the automaker's navigation system to the test.
The screen responds quickly to touch inputs and allows for pinch-to-zoom operation. Voice commands, which accurately interpret speech, are the primary means of adding new destinations to the navigation system. At a stoplight, drivers can also type in addresses or locations to a search bar. Search results get fairly granular and can be filtered by pricing, hours of operation, and more. Additionally, a new destination can be selected directly from the map by simply tapping its waypoint.
Corolla Cross Hybrid models can also adjust engine braking and prioritize the battery's state of charge based on GPS points where the car typically decelerates to improve fuel efficiency. Another cool feature is that directions are displayed on the digital instrument cluster, with the current road, an arrow pointing toward the next direction, distance until the step in the journey, and the name of the next road.Toyota's navigation system is slick.
On our journey, we got our final destination loaded up and followed the route out of Los Angeles, making a couple stops for errands on the way out. Searching for locations was no issue with voice commands, and the routes appeared to follow the optimal flow of traffic based on our experiences living in this area.We only ran into trouble when we finally hit I-5, a major thoroughfare stretching from the Mexican to Canadian borders, running through California, Oregon, and Washington.
Frustratingly, Toyota's infotainment software doesn't allow Cloud Navigation to run at the same time as any mapping software on the mobile device that's mirroring on the touchscreen. When we fired up directions on Waze to get a more granular view of what was on the road ahead, Toyota's infotainment system told us it was disabling the other active route.
