We need a Jamie Oliver style revolution

This year I went for the smug July option and have been eyeing my child’s healthy appetite with caution, suggesting he might not want to eat up all his vegetables and keeping him up late, all in the hopes of staving off the regular growth spurts that send us shopping for new clothes and shoes far more than a cost-living-crisis allows for. I’m joking, of course..

In shoe shops with crowded tables and “Back to School” signs displayed proudly all the shoe styles on offer seemed not to have changed since the 1940s. There were brogues and loafers with scuffable leather and fiddly lace ups for the boys and, worse still, Mary Janes, court shoes with tiny heels and pointy toes for the girls.

It might sound petty to complain about sending children to school in shoes that make them look like tiny accountants, but there is a more serious point to be made. Especially when uniform-appropriate school shoes cost £45 to £60, so much more than a decent pair of trainers, which would arguably be more comfortable and would reduce the need for children to wear that other most maligned item of schoolwear – a PE plimsoll.
