He’s also staging what he calls a stand up strike starting with three plants—one each from Ford, General Motors Co. and Stellantis. Fain said the number of locations to be struck will grow as he see’s fit depending on the pace and complexion of negotiations.
While they attempt to bang out a new contract with the UAW, across the Detroit River in Canada the clock is ticking as their pact withthe union representing autoworkers in that country is set to expire at a minute before midnight Monday. The union chose Ford, which operates an assembly plant in Oakville, Ontario, near Toronto, as its target. The Oakville plant employs 3,600 workers, 3,400 of whom are hourly according to Ford’s website. The Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus SUVs are built there.Unless a strike is called Unifor members will work under an extended contract while talks continue. That’s another area where the UAW’s Fain broke with tradition.
In an update posted Sunday on Unifor’s bargaining talks website the assessment was no better, declaring, “Talks have continued to progress since Unifor’sat both master and local tables. However, at this late stage in the negotiations, the union and the company remain far apart.
