The Canberra Liberals are proposing that some serious offenders who have been granted bail should be fitted with electronic monitoring bracelets.
"We have had significant community concern about a number of people who have gone on to offend whilst out on bail, and a lot of question marks about, why were these people allowed on bail?" Opposition Leader Elizabeth Lee said. "They are either having to send certain people who have been charged into the AMC or to let them go, and they are missing that option of being able to monitor them."The ACT government is currently running two separate processes, one reviewing the territory's bail laws, and another looking specifically into electronic monitoring not just for those on bail.
He said politicians should wait for the recommendations of the review before proposing changes to bail laws."All these things are worth considering, and it's important to do it carefully and in a considered way, which is, I think, why the law reform and sentencing council will be a good place to exercise those issues, so that whatever determination government makes, it has a strong and arguable basis," Mr Boersig said.
As part of their announcement, the party also proposed recruiting another 200 police officers, upgrading some of Canberra's police stations, and a range of other measures.
