The arrival of Canberra's fleet of electric buses in October 2023 marked a significant milestone in the city's commitment to sustainable transportation. However, the initial optimism surrounding these zero-emission vehicles was met with technical challenges, forcing Transport Canberra to temporarily remove four Custom Denning 'Element' buses from service.
These issues, identified during the commissioning process, prompted the return of the affected buses to their Sydney-based manufacturer for repairs. Transport Minister Chris Steel emphasized that while the government leased these buses from Custom Denning, the manufacturer would bear the responsibility for the repair costs. He assured the public that the majority of Canberra's electric buses, primarily Yutong models, were operating reliably. The government has already deployed 36 Yutong buses, with five more undergoing the acceptance and commissioning process. The initial challenges with the Custom Denning buses, while concerning, have not deterred the government from its ambitious plan to acquire a total of 106 zero-emission buses over a three-year period. This commitment, coupled with a pledge to purchase an additional 110 electric buses over four years, reflects the ACT government's unwavering dedication to electrifying its public transport network. Minister Steel expressed confidence in the procurement processes employed by Transport Canberra and City Service, citing the successful integration of 90 Yutong electric buses as evidence of their effectiveness.
