A new study found that 40 per cent of cancer cases in the US could be attributed to unhealthy but changeable habits.
Over 30 types of cancer may be preventable by making certain lifestyle changes, according to new research.
The factors include cigarette smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, poor diet, and infections. To come to conclusions, scientists analysed American health data, looking at hundreds of thousands reports of cancer cases and deaths in those aged over 30 the US in 2019. Top Health Stories Today In this study, researchers used American representative data on cancer incidence and mortality and risk factor prevalence to estimate the proportion and number of cases and deaths attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors. Research focused on 30 cancer types, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers.
Results showed cigarette smoking had the largest proportion of cancer cases attributable to risk factors in the population . It contributed to 56 per cent of all potentially preventable cancers in men and 39.9 per cent in women . Lung cancer had the largest number of cases attributable to evaluated risk factors in both men and women , followed by skin melanoma , colorectal cancer . Urinary urinary bladder cancer had the largest amount of cases in men and breast , endometrial , and colorectal cancer in women.
