Despite facing a Supreme Court action from former player Jackson Topine alleging assault and causing psychiatric injury during training, Canterbury Bulldogs' coaching staff have been voted the best in the NRL by a player poll conducted by the Rugby League Players Association. The poll saw 512 players across 17 NRL clubs rate their clubs across various categories on a scale of zero to ten, with Canterbury topping the 'high-performance staffing' category.
Eighteen months ago, Canterbury’s coaching staff were accused of leaving Jackson Topine with “psychiatric injury” and “physical and mental impairment” afterTopine was sacked at the end of the 2023 season, and laterin which he claims he was subjected to “assault” – which Canterbury have denied – when forced to wrestle a succession of teammates in short intervals during a training session.
A total of 512 players across all 17 NRL clubs took part in the poll, in which they were asked to rate the performances of their club across all areas on a scale of zero to 10. Judging by the RLPA poll, Touma – along with sprint coach Rubin Ruzicka, strength coach Chad McGill and sport scientist Matt Chandler – retains the respect of the Bulldogs players.
