Investor group warns on Australia's weak emissions goals l p_hannam

The analysis by the Investor Group on Climate Change [IGCC] came as the Swedish government - one of five European nations to rule out using any surplus generated by beating Kyoto Protocol emissions targets - told theA failure or delay in Australia's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will leave the economy vulnerable, an investor group says.

"It would decrease action and therefore increase the risk to the economy," Mr Jackson said. "We'd be cantering off a cliff." However, Labor has refused to rule out banking the credits either, a move that would effectively slice the goal to a 35 per cent reduction, IGCC's analysis shows."The use of carryover also means a substantial reduction in the rate at which Australia’s emissions reductions targets decline through time," IGCC said.

"Internationally, this would likely be interpreted as backsliding on previous emissions commitments and being against the rules of the Paris Agreement that state that each new emissions target should be stronger than the last," IGCC said.
