Opinion Capitol crime as Fox News cancels the greatest show in town
Beginning at 9am Friday, Australian Eastern Standard Time, an unprecedented spectacle will unfold in Washington DC. After more than a year of investigation, the committee tasked by the House of Representatives to probe the roots of the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol will begin its long-awaited public hearings into that sordid subject.
Meanwhile, bands of militia members, already on the scene, were suiting up, some of them in riot gear and moving in formation. The Capitol police force was quickly overwhelmed. Many hours of brutal violence and vulgar desecration unfolded. At least seven deaths are attributed to the attack, and hundreds of police officers were injured, according to official reports.
This is plainly a move to minimise the import of the hearing. It’s a political decision, not a news one. It’s designed to reduce any cauterising effect a true account of how the insurrection unfolded might have on Fox’s core viewership.
