Survivors say up to 100 children may have been on board the boat that capsized off the coast of Greece in one of the “worst tragedies recorded off European shores in a decade”

which was about 30m long, is believed to have sailed from the Tobruk area in eastern Libya before it got into difficulty in Greece’s southern Peloponnese region around 2am on Wednesday.

Medical tents have been set up at the Hellenic Coastguard port hangar in Kalamata, Greece to deal with the incident : “[The survivors] told us there were children in the bottom of the ship. Children and women. The higher number appeared to be corroborated by another survivor asked by Greece’s ANT1 channel how many children were on board.

Greek authorities said 104 survivors had been brought ashore, including migrants from Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Palestine. The coastguard said none of those rescued were wearing a life jacket or carrying life-saving equipment.Victims’ bodies have been transferred to a cemetery near Athens for DNA tests and government sources have said chances of retrieving the sunken vessel were remote because of the depth of the water.

According to Greek broadcaster Skai, witnesses reported the vessel departed from Egypt and stopped at the Libyan port of Tobruk before setting sail for Italy. “You cannot carry out a violent diversion on such a vessel with so many people on board … without any sort of cooperation,” coast guard spokesperson Nikos Alexiou told state broadcaster ERT.
