The Avengers telepath department gets an upgrade.
Warning: contains spoilers for Uncanny Avengers #1!Captain America is finally acknowledging the Avengers’ greatest weakness. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes represent a diverse array of awesome powers and abilities, but in Uncanny Avengers #1, Captain America admits the team has always been lacking in one critical department: not enough telepaths. As Cap rebuilds the Unity Squad in the wake of this year’s Hellfire Gala, this weakness will be addressed.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Uncanny Avengers #1 – written by Gerry Duggan, drawn by Javier Garron, colored by Morry Hollowell, lettered by Travis Lanham – finds Captain America putting together a new Avengers Unity Squad, a team consisting of both Avengers and mutants, to oppose the fascist anti-mutant ideology spread by Orchis. As he assembles the team, Cap admits the Avengers have always been weak in the “telepathic department,” and that this must change.
It's High Time the Avengers Embraced Telepaths Since the formation of the Avengers 60 years ago, many Marvel heroes have come and gone from the team. Every recruit has brought something to the table in terms of powers, but Captain America is correct: telepathy has always been an area where the team lacked. While the X-Men have traditionally been loaded with psychics and telepaths, the Avengers go without.
This is a mistake Captain America intends to correct with this new incarnation of the Avengers Unity Squad. This year’s Hellfire Gala was mutantkind’s darkest moment, and in its wake, they are hated and feared like never before. Captain America cannot stand on the sidelines, and has thus reformed the Unity Squad.
It is an overdue moment in the history of Marvel Comics, as the Avengers are finally welcoming psychics into their fold. Captain America’s Avengers teammate Iron Man recently met Emma Frost for the first time, giving Tony first-hand experience with psychics and telepaths. Emma is one of Earth’s most powerful telepaths, and now she is an ally of the Avengers; Psylocke also possesses highly crucial psionic powers, able to focus her abilities into psychic knives.
