The ARL Commission has provisionally endorsed a new “Captain’s Challenge” system to be implemented for the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership.
The proposed"captain's challenge" will be trialed in marquee All Stars and Charity Shield pre-season fixtures after being provisionally approved by the ARL Commission.
Under the proposed change, each side will have the chance to lodge an official challenge with the NRL video bunker for a disputed ruling, with the intention of taking pressure off referees and removing more glaring mistakes from the game. The NRL will trial the captain's challenge rule change at the All Stars game on February 22 and the Charity Shield game in Mudgee between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Illawarra Dragons on February 29.
NRL head of football Graham Annesley presented to the Commission on how the captain's challenge system works on Thursday, having been tasked with exploring the concept by the ARLC in December.
