Caravan of courage: How family is driving Rabbitohs young gun Davvy Moale | proshenks

When Davvy Moale first promised his parents he would make it to the NRL, he knew it was an ambition that could lead to a better life for his family.“It was a bit tough but being with your family, it didn’t really feel that way. We didn’t have a lot, but my parents always made sure we didn’t go without. They have made a lot of sacrifices for all of us, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for their kids.

The Moales - six children as well as their parents - lived in a caravan in Botany about a decade ago. It was the only lodgings they could afford while Moale’s father worked as a fish filleter and his mum raised the children. Their family now live in more traditional lodgings, with the goal of one day being able to buy their own home.

It has been a heady rise for the 19-year-old, one of the youngest prop-forwards in the competition. Remaining level-headed won’t be an issue, given where he has come from and what he still hopes to achieve.Moale hasn’t had to look far for inspiration. His hero was Evanda, a brother six years his senior who sparked a love of football. There’s also older sister Moniqua, who beat Moale to his ambition of representing the Rabbitohs when she made the grade in the women’s competition.
