Sky News host Chris Kenny says the “witch hunt” and media trial of Cardinal Pell continues to portray “this desperate push to find a scapegoat for the sins of the Catholic church”.

On Tuesday it was reported Victoria Police has launched a new investigation into child abuse allegations against Cardinal Pell dating back to the 1970s. It comes as Cardinal Pell had his conviction overturned last week by Australia’s highest court in a unanimous decision, after having spent 405 days in jail following an initial ruling which had found him guilty on child sex offences. “Here we go again,” Mr Kenny said.

“Another curiously timed claim, another curiously timed investigation, another intriguing leak to the media”. Mr Kenny said the “enemies” of Cardinal Pell in the media and in political circles “have proudly proclaimed they refuse to recognise his innocence”. He said those enemies of the Cardinal “have not given up” and will continue to pursue this “get-Pell affair”.

ABC and social media audiences ‘love satirical snark’ | Sky News AustraliaABC and social media audiences ‘love satirical snark’ | Sky News AustraliaInstead of adding to the “trial by media vibe” targeting Cardinal Pell or making light of the coronavirus crisis, Tim Minchin should be using his musical “talents for good, rather than snark,” says Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\nMr Kenny said the comedian has performed songs attacking Cardinal Pell in 2016, something which “the ABC and social media loved”. \n\nHe also presented a song about Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic along with a previous satirical work about how “Australians are a little bit racist and homophobic,” Mr Kenny said. \n\n“The thing with Minchin is that he is vastly talented … Wouldn't it be great if Minchin was more like Matilda, and used his unique talents for good, rather than snark”. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia
