Cardinals closer Carlos Martinez has performed and acted his way out of being the definitive ninth-inning guy.
Luckily for the St. Louis Cardinals, their manager, Mike Shildt, does. That is why on the morning before the Cardinals faced the Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the National League Division Series, a do-or-die game for the Cards who are down 2-1 in the best-of-five series, the manager declined to commit to his closer for the ninth inning if the opportunity arose.
“There will be a discussion,” Shildt said during his pre-game media session Monday, refusing to guarantee that a save situation would automatically go to Martinez if the Cards were fortunate enough to be in that position for Game 4. He also said he would have to make sure Martinez is in the right “state of mind” before using him in a critical situation.
Martinez eventually closed out that game for St. Louis, and after doing so started started yelling toward the Braves dugout before catcher Yadier Molina held him back and shoved him in the opposite direction. You can see that near the end of this video below. That has led to Shildt reconsidering how to use Martinez going forward. Not only are the antics played out, but if you’re doing it while allowing runs, then your role is in jeopardy. As it should be.
