Special election would cost city up to $500,000, according to Registrar of Voters Office estimate

The Carlsbad City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to appoint someone to its vacant District 2 seat, rather than hold a costly and time-consuming special election, but the council failed to agree on a member to represent the city at an important regional agency.

Acosta agreed, and said, “Other cities have found themselves in the same place, deadlocked, so we are not the only one.” The District 2 vacancy was created by Blackburn’s election to mayor in November, midway through his four-year council term. The council has until Feb. 24 to select someone for the partial term.

Applications can be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office through Feb. 2 and, after verification, will be posted on the city website as they are received. The applications will be reviewed and the candidates introduced at a special council meeting Feb. 15.
