People are heading to the coast to make the most of the sunny weather before thunderstorms hit the region on Monday and Tuesday

Huge queues have been pictured at a beach popular with Lancashire tourists as thousands flock to the seaside to enjoy the sizzling heatwave.

Those journeying to Ainsdale beach were over traffic and urged to plan ahead as the car park operates a one-in-one-out operation after filling up in the space of just a few hours earlier today. The car park holds an estimated 2,000 cars. However, due to the high tide, beach parking is only able to accommodate 500 cars, meaning cars lined both Shore Road and the Coastal Road as eager daytrippers wait patiently to get their chance in the sun, the ECHO reports. Sefton Council invited people to park in other parts of the borough and travel to the beach by foot or by public transport.
