LEE JASPER, former Policing Director for London and Chair of the Alliance for Police Accountability, writes on racism in the Met and the devasting findings of the s recently published Baroness Casey's Review.
There was a knock on the door, and I answered. There on my doorstep were two plainclothes police officers in shabby suits. They asked my name, and once I confirmed who I was, they asked me to sit in their car for a few moments while talking to me about a criminal incident. I softly closed my front door behind me. I didn’t call my Mum for a good reason. My Mom was and is fierce in her rejection of racism, and I was among the many Black kids who had to calibrate what I told my mother.
My front door opened, and Mum saw me, marched over to the vehicle, asked what was going on, and told the officers I was juvenile and to let me out of the car immediately. What these officers said my mother has stayed with me from that day till this. The officers then drove off with me in the back. Now with a screaming 12-year-old in the car they eventually stopped around a mile from my house, let me out with a warning about my ‘mouthy mother’, and allowed me to walk home.
Given our history, such stark oppressions resonates with our historical experience providing contemporary resonance with the unresolved moral injury of forced and brutal enslavement and colonisation. As a servant leader, I have had the misfortune to counsel and support many families of those that have died in police or prison custody and watched them weep as justice is routinely denied. I have seen fine Black police officers’ and staff’s lives and careers ruined and made hell by the racism and sexism of their fellow officers and staff colleagues.
