The Defence Department has outlined a new 'careers referral' initiative that sets up 'an incentive scheme to encourage members to refer people to join the ADF'.

ADF members who encourage someone to join the military will receive $1,000 if the recruit completes 12 months of service.

In a newly published determination, the Defence Department has outlined a new "careers referral" initiative that sets up "an incentive scheme to encourage members to refer people to join the ADF". Minister for Veterans' Affairs Matt Keogh says under the National Defence Strategy the government is "exploring many options to improve our recruitment, to grow our defence force".The government says more personnel are needed to operate new military capability, including promised nuclear-powered submarines and missile systems. But defence insiders doubt the ADF will be able to attract the numbers needed.
