In his first month since trade from Boston, Christian Vázquez has meshed with pitching staff and has brought a new light (literally) to clubhouse.

Catcher Christian Vazquez, talking with closer Ryan Pressly last month, has been learning the staff since coming to Houston from Boston.A blinding light beams out of Christian Vázquez’s locker and washes the back of the Astros clubhouse in a white phosphorescent glow.

It has been a little more than a month since the Astros acquired Vázquez on Aug. 1, and since then the veteran catcher’s lighthearted yet diligent approach has endeared him to the clubhouse. Now, Vázquez has caught every Astros reliever on the active roster. Among the starting rotation, he has caught all but Lance McCullers Jr., Hunter Brown and Justin Verlander.Vázquez says he is “100 percent” prepared.

Vázquez has caught Luis Garcia in five starts, José Urquidy in four, Cristian Javier in four and Framber Valdez once.“I don't feel a big difference catching with and Maldonado,” Urquidy said. “They are pretty similar about studying hitters at the moment. They like to see swings. They see where the hitter's at in the at-bat and they call the pitch.”

Vázquez has made all 14 of his starts for the Astros at catcher with six pinch-hit appearances, and his playing time has recently increased. He has started seven of the Astros’ last 12 games dating back to Aug. 25; in each of those starts, Houston gave up three or fewer runs.
