Locals at Catherine Hill Bay have salvaged parts of a century-old timber mining jetty. Now they want to see it used in a Stonehenge-like sculpture for the town.
When a bushfire ripped through Catherine Hill Bay in 2013, what was left of the town's iconic timber jetty was almost destroyed.
"He's come to this site and we spoke about the idea of what a sculpture could represent, how it could look, and how the timber could be incorporated," Mr Hawcroft said."So rather than sort of trying to redefine the timber, we could use this timber to stand it upright in a type of mini Stonehenge ... it would be simple, but it would be very significant.
"If they have what we call annual growth rings that would be very exciting, because that means we could actually start having a look at how those rings varied prior to 1880 and potentially give some information about flood, drought or even bushfire history in the region."Dr Verdon-Kidd said she would also be sending samples of the wood to the University of New South Wales for radiocarbon dating, to determine how old the trees were.
