NSW police have released CCTV images of two people believed to be involved in the vandalism of a Sydney synagogue with swastikas. The incident is part of a concerning trend of antisemitic attacks in Australia.

NSW police have released CCTV images of two individuals they believe may be able to assist in their investigation of a swastika vandalism attack on a Sydney synagogue. The attack, which occurred around 4:30 am on Saturday, saw a male and female spray-paint red swastikas across the front wall of the Newtown synagogue in Sydney ’s inner west. They also ignited a clear liquid that burned out within minutes, although it could have had deadly consequences if it had taken hold.

Jewish leaders condemned the latest antisemitic attack, calling it a “failed act of terrorism” that risked the safety and property of residents. The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president, David Ossip, stated that the “hateful criminals” were not simply attempting to deface a place of worship but were seeking to destroy it. Ossip urged anyone with information about the perpetrators to come forward and contact the police. This incident is part of a concerning trend of antisemitic attacks in Australia. Hours before the Newtown attack, similar graffiti was spray-painted on a home in Queens Park, and cars and a trailer were vandalized. On Friday, the Southern Sydney synagogue in Allawah was also vandalized with swastikas, while police are investigating offensive comments written on a poster in Marrickville.NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the attacks, stating that they are against everything that a multicultural and multi-faith community stands for. He pledged that the government would continue to support Jewish institutions to beef up security in the coming weeks. The Inner West mayor, Darcy Byrne, also condemned the “appalling and cowardly” vandalism.Investigators have released images of two people clad in black clothing they want to speak to about the attack in Newtown. The rise of hate speech and intimidation in Australia has been linked to the conflict in Gaza.
