Millions of American adults are now eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine booster following Thursday's approval from the CDC, which also gave the go ahead for mixing of vaccines for the first time. Learn more:

CDC Director Rochelle Walneksy, MD, later gave final approval to the panel’s recommendations making boosters available immediately.

There are an estimated 47 million people who have gotten Pfizer vaccines and 39 million people vaccinated with Moderna who are now eligible for a booster dose, according to data presented by the CDC. “I can't say that I am comfortable that anybody under 50 needs—an otherwise healthy individual--needs a booster vaccine at this time with either Moderna or Pfizer,” said ACIP member Sarah Long, MD, a professor of pediatrics at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The evidence to date shows that all the vaccines authorized for use in the U.S. continue to protect people well against severe COVID-19 outcomes, including hospitalization and death. But breakthrough infections are on the rise, especially for people who initially received the Johnson and Johnson one-dose vaccine.
