Hotel and rental car bookings are up compared to a year ago, signaling the possibility of congested roads as travelers take one last trip during the summer season.
It may not be the biggest holiday weekend for long-distance getaways, but this Labor Day is shaping up as a high-demand travel period for San Diego and the rest of Southern California — at least compared to last year. So says the Automobile Club.
For Southern California travelers, though, the most popular destinations are not that much different from every other holiday period. Las Vegas is No. 1, followed by San Diego. They were also the top two for the Fourth of July weekend. Rounding out the top five are the Central Coast ; the Grand Canyon; and Mexico, which typically is the destination of choice for those retreating to all-inclusive resorts or taking cruises.Booking data across the U.S.
Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe said last week that wholesale gasoline prices in Los Angeles and San Francisco were surging “because there is limited supply on the wholesale market and a lot of demand from refiners looking to buy excess supply. The combination of those factors is continuing to put upward pressure on prices at the pump.”
Next Thursday, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. is expected to be the single busiest time on the roads, according to INRIX, a global provider of transportation data and insights. Friday as well is expected to have higher than normal traffic volumes — between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m.
