The ex Hoops strike hero knows his old side will never tire of burying the Ibrox side but said they must look beyond domestic domination.

It might be the start of the Premiership defence this weekend, but surely the eye stretches beyond domestic battles and into Europe. The time has come for Celtic to make a proper impact. Having managed to secure a third-straight title at the end of last season, Rodgers is again spared the anguish of the qualifiers. While Rangers are heading off to Poland on Tuesday for a cut-throat qualifier against Dynamo Kiev, Celtic will have feet up at home.

I’m not going to waste time going over all of that again because I made my feelings clear. At the same time, I understand that it is not easy getting deals done, that it needs a selling club to play ball as well as you sourcing the individuals and forking out the money. But Celtic were still piecing themselves together when they went into their first game against Feyenoord last season and you really don’t want that to be happening again.

When Celtic won the Scottish Cup Final through Adam Idah’s goal, Rodgers openly stated at Hampden straight after the game he wanted the Irishman’s services on a permanent agreement. I accept that Rodgers will have a main target for the position and, if it takes until the final day of the window to get him secured, then fine. It’s likely to be worth the wait for the fans. Nonetheless, I can’t help but feel some things could be moving quicker as there’s no time for slacking. Cast your mind a year ago, Celtic went out of the League Cup in the last-16 at the hands of Kilmarnock as they messed around in the market.
