Tuesday’s release of 2021 census data will provide the first look at new data on long-term health conditions, Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh says.
In an introductory speech to Australian Bureau of Statistics staff earlier this month, new minister Andrew Leigh revealed something of a personal frustration with how some government programs are designed in Canberra.
Dr Leigh calls the information “super exciting”, including new questions on military service and long-term health conditions.Parliament attracts plenty of wonks, but day to day political life typically compels them to hide their nerdish lamps under bushels; Dr Leigh’s signature is his refusal to do the same.
“About half the country was in lockdown when the census was conducted, so there’s going to be a lot of people in coastal communities, spending time in their holiday house rather than being in their usual residence,” he said.“They have your usual place of residence. Someone with a house in Hawthorn and a beach house on the Great Ocean Road, their usual place of residence will be Hawthorn, for example.
