Established and rising art stars of the nation’s vast red interior converged at the Ayers Rock Resort complex for the opening of the GoCA on March 31.
June Smith and Jillary Lynch have come a long way. Together they have travelled for more than five hours over 527 kilometres from Ltyentye Apurte to join other Indigenous artists at the Ayers Rock Resort at Uluru.
During a display of their dot-painting method, they work side-by-side with intense concentration and accuracy on their art, practised in the lively, bright “I lean in to ask about the implement Lynch is using to apply the paint: “paddle-pop stick”, she grins, holding it up for me to inspect.until it doubled as a first birthday celebration when the opening ceremony was finally held on March 31.as a fully functioning enterprise, already received warmly by both artists and tourists.
She pays little attention to onlookers and would-be interviewers as she paints. The words “Self Made” are emblazoned in bright red on her shirt, conveying a sassiness that’s intriguing when contrasted against her delicate, almost whimsical painting style – a mist of fine white dots creating intricate patterns on a swirling blue background.
