Riley Grant seemed healthy, but he was a 'ticking time bomb' for a paediatric stroke. Now his mum wants other parents to recognise the signs.
Central Queensland woman Angie Smith is raising awareness for paediatric strokes, after her 15-year-old son had a category four strokeSymptoms of a stroke can include weakness, slurred speech and facial drooping, among other signs"It was just a ticking time bomb that we didn't realise was there," Ms Smith said."It was crazy because I didn't know what the hell was happening, he was a healthy kid.
The Stroke Foundation says on average about 600 Australian children experience a stroke annually, and parents can be unaware of the risk. "They told us … he would possibly never walk or talk or remember anything, and they told us to prepare for that," Ms Smith said. Dr Murphy said the outcome of a stroke depends on the speed of medical intervention, as well as which part of the brain was affected."It's been really, really hard … I'm now frightened about something going wrong all the time," she said.She thanked the hospitals, doctors and ambulance workers involved in her son's care, as well as her employer and the wider Emerald community.
