AUSTIN, Texas — As tech jobs continue to boom in Texas, the diversity of that sector's workforce continues to lag. Abigail Jaimes is a senior in high school, and she’s already working in biomedicine. In her class, she’s demonstrating a technique of isolating DNS called nano-dropping.Jaimes isn’t a typical high school student, and this isn’t a typical science lab. She’s one of more than 900 future female scientists, techies, engineers and mathematicians attending the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin.

“Greater diversity allows us to become greater problem solvers,” Jaimes said. “We understand others more and more women in the workforce like STEM, it just allows more perspective.” Ana Josephson teaches eighth grade STEM and ninth grade media tech at ARS. She says having hands on education is significant for these young ladies.
