Chris Minns will suspend the union and ban any donations from it after a hidden police camera captured a union leader being passed $5000 in a suspected kickback deal.
NSW Premier Chris Minns has backed the federal government’s move to appoint an independent administrator in charge of the CFMEU in NSW after announcing he would suspend the militant union and reject any donations from it.political donations from the CFMEU following disturbing interstate allegations of violence and intimidation by the union, while Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan did the same on Monday.
“The NSW government has taken the view that the CFMEU construction division is either unable or unwilling to reform its leadership in the face of devastating allegations that are of a very serious nature,” he said. Mr Minns said the NSW government would work with the federal government on a co-ordinated approach and ask it to review enterprise bargaining agreements in NSW which the CFMEU is party to.
There is no suggestion Mr Greenfield is guilty, only that it is unusual for the leader of an organisation to stay in the role after being charged with corruption. When asked what NSW Labor should do with money the CFMEU had donated to it, Mr Minns said the funds had been spent already and that it would be “ridiculous” to tap donors to pay back money to the union given the allegations against it.
