Chad Foster — right, owner of Foster Farm & Ranch, a Uvalde-based real estate company that specializes in flipping ranches — talks with Dos Venados ranch owner Mark McLiney on Nov. 29. McLiney used Foster’s company to buy the ranch between Devine and Castroville.Chad Foster has been looking at ranches since he was a child growing up on the border in Eagle Pass. He recalls memorizing the names of the ranches on drives to and from San Antonio.
With a staff of 10 real estate agents, the firm works with clients across Texas and, more recently, in New Mexico. One of its current listings is the nearly 10,000-acre Arrowhead Ranch near McAllen, once owned by the late U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen. The property listing touts its excellent whitetail deer population and opportunities for quail and turkey hunting in specially cleared areas around ponds and windmills. It also features exotic species such as the scimitar oryx.
He recently sat with the Express-News for an interview about the economics of flipping ranches, the purpose of a “barndominium” and the exotic game industry in Texas. The following has been edited for brevity and clarity.I’m looking for something that’s either undervalued or has a lot of value-add to it. That can be anywhere from fencing, roadwork, additional water; improving the wildlife herd, whether it be introducing some kind of exotic species or developing the whitetail herd.
